Summer Institutes at Mount Holyoke
The Education Development Center of Newton, MA and SummerMath for Teachers at Mount Holyoke College offer The Mathematics Leadership Program (MLP), a set of coordinated professional development experiences for educational leaders who have a range of roles and responsibilities.
The MLP Summer Institutes provide school systems with a unique opportunity to develop a team of local leaders. Leadership teams can be composed of teachers, teacher-leaders, math specialists, math coaches, building principals, central office staff, and/or professional developers Individuals may attend any of the institutes depending on their personal interests and the needs of the school system.
The MLP Summer Institutes, held at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA, are designed to provide flexibility by offering a variety of one-week programs from which team members can choose. Team members may attend one, two, or three institutes.
Content Institutes: Learn the materials
Three one-week programs allow participants to engage with the three main components of MLP:
- Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI), a professional development curriculum for teachers.
- Lenses on Learning with a Focus on Systems (LOLS), based on the Secondary Lenses on Learning professional development program for middle and high school principals and other leaders in administrative and instructional roles.
- Professional Development for Mathematics Coaching (PDMC), designed for math coaches, leaders of coaching programs, and teacher-leaders.
In these content institutes, participants will engage with the ideas and activities of each program in sessions led by the authors of the materials in collaboration with educational leaders who have experience with these materials in their own practice. Participants in the DMI seminar will choose one of the seven DMI modules on which to focus.
Facilitation Institutes: Learn how to facilitate the materials
MLP also offers facilitation institutes designed to help participants develop skills and knowledge for leading seminars at their own sites. The facilitation institute is linked to one of the content institutes:
- Developing Mathematical Ideas-Facilitation (DMI-F)
- Professional Development for Mathematics Coaching- Facilitation (PDMC-F)
Each of the facilitation institutes requires previous experience with the materials. Participants in DMI-F will choose one of the DMI modules upon which to focus their facilitation work. Participants in PDMC-F should have attended PDMC previously or consulted directly with the PDMC facilitation team.
DMI-F, LOLS, and PDMC are offered concurrently, providing opportunities for strategic planning among team members attending the different institutes. The strategic planning session is designed to support the development of a site plan with each team member offering a specific perspective depending on which institute they are attending.
